< Back to Welcome Center Marcy Smith Raku-Fired Pottery Small Raku-Fired Vases Marcy Smith is an art teacher and ceramicist from Hoschton, Georgia. She specializes in creating tiny, wheel-thrown raku-fired vases and bowls. The raku firing process involves heating the piece to a glowing 1800 degrees, then quickly transferring it to a can filled with combustible materials, such as sawdust, paper or dried leaves. The intensely hot pottery ignites the combustibles, creating flames. The cover is quickly placed on the can, and the flames reduce the oxygen inside. The metallic and copper rainbow glaze effect is then created in the oxygen-deprived environment. The glaze fiish on each ceramic piece is unique, as raku firing produces different dazzling results each time. Note: The pottery is not food safe, and should be exposed to a limited amount of water. < Back to Welcome Center Sheila Hughey Handmade Jewelry Handmade Jewelry Sheila Hugey began showing artistic abilities at a young age while still living in Michigan. She took oil painting lessons from a private teacher and advanced to taking drawing and painting classes at Oakland Community Collage. In 1973, she moved to Georgia and was still painting. In the 1980s, she attended Georgia State University to study art. She was advised by her professors that her strong points were two- and three-dimensional design, though she didn't pursue the direction until the 1990s, when her cousin sent her a beaded amulet bag from Ireland. That brought out her desire to create with beads and make jewelry. Sheila took several weeklong courses at the William Holland Lapidary School, including silversmithing, and also haunted bead stores and found one that offered Wednesday night and Saturday get-togethers to bead beautiful jewelry. There were several bead artists that also did wire wrap jewelry and she was off to her next learning experience, bringing the two- and three-dimensional design to life. Sheila has taught beading and wire wrapping for many years since then, and loves making a different style of design in each piece she creates. < Back to Welcome Center Kim Barge Painting & Textiles Hand-Painted Scarves Kim Barge is an artist and art educator, born and raised in Georgia, that currently lives in Buford, Georgia with her husband, Tim. Kim obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Textiles from Georgia State University, her Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of North Georgia, and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She had her first solo show in January of 2023 at the Sugar Hill Art Gallery and has locally displayed her work in group juried shows for over 8 years. Kim is currently an art professor at the University of North Georgia and has a studio at the Tannery Row Artist Colony in Buford.
