History of Braselton The Town of Braselton was officially incorporated in 1916, but our story begins in 1867 with William Harrison Braselton, a young farmer from Hall County who was just beginning to make his way in the world. He fell in love with Susan Frances Hosch whose father was a wealthy plantation owner. The two were married at Hosch plantation and started a family. The Braselton's had five children: William Henry, Green, John Oliver, Belle and Lena. The three Braselton brothers went on to become the famous founders of the town. In 1876, William, Susan and family established a farm on nearly 800 acres in what is now the Town of Braselton. They built a successful agricultural operation that included farming, dairy cattle, saw mill, grist mill, and cotton. By the early 1900s, the Braselton children were young adults. The three brothers inherited their father's entrepreneurial spirit and the family farm. They continued to expand the family business partnering in a successful mercantile, Braselton Brothers Department Store, that would become the heart of Braselton. Today this historic building has been meticulously preserved and repurposed as The 1904 which houses an eclectic array of boutique shops, artisanal eateries and cultural spaces. In 1970, Road Atlanta was born to host a Can-Am series race, and soon the track hosted some of the top series of the time: Formula 5000, IMSA Kamel GT and Trans Am. The track was sold several times beginning in 1978 and eventually went bankrupt in 1993. In 1996, Road Atlanta was purchased by Don Panoz who invested heavily to bring the facility back to racing prominence and further promote endurance racing in the United States. In 2012, Road Atlanta was purchased by Nascar Holdings, and in 2019, French tire company, Michelin became the first ever entitlement partner of the race track, and the facility was renamed Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. The Raceway hosts the iconic Motul Petit Le Mans and a wide variety of events including professional and amateur sports car and motorcycle races, racing and driving schools, corporate programs and testing for motorsports teams. Established in 1981 by Don and Nancy Panoz, Chateau Elan was the first winery in the region since Prohibition. Today it is one of the most awarded wineries on the southeast coast, and the resort spans 3500 acres to include golf courses, an inn, 10 onsite restaurants, a European style spa, several residential communities, a lodge, a conference center, a tennis center and tasting rooms. Today residents and visitors can step back in time and tour restored cotton gins, neoclassical revival style homes, a roller mill, or even hop aboard a vintage-styled trolley while enjoying modern amenities, award-winning wine and cuisine, art and cultural attractions, and top-notch motorsports racing. The Mill Housed in the historic Enterprise Roller Mill, our welcome center stands as a beacon of hospitality, ready to guide you toward the adventure you’re looking for—whether you’re a curious traveler, a history enthusiast, a connoisseur of culinary delights or a seasoned local in search of hidden gems.
